Exploring History and Conservation

Third-stage students from the Department of Interior Design at Tishk International University-Sulaimani (TIUS) participated in a historical site visit, guided by Ms. Berivan Aso. The exploration took place at the First Governance Headquarters of Malik Mahmood (Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji), born in 1878 in Slemani, Kurdistan, Iraq. Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji served as the governor of Slemani during the British occupation of Iraq after the First World War. Currently, half of the building has been meticulously reconstructed and conserved, while the other half is undergoing the preservation process.

This site, rich in history and heritage, provided our students with a unique opportunity to witness the intricate work involved in preserving architectural and cultural treasures. The visit encompassed various aspects, from restoring intricate details to conserving historical materials, offering a hands-on perspective on the challenges and triumphs of conservation efforts. The day’s exploration extended beyond historical preservation, concluding with a visit to another historical gem that has been transformed into a vibrant café and restaurant. This adaptive reuse exemplifies the seamless integration of history with modern functionality, showcasing the potential of blending the old with the new.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Civil Development Organization (CDO) for graciously opening their doors to us and for sharing their expertise in historical conservation. We encourage everyone to engage with and support local initiatives dedicated to the preservation of our heritage. Beyond preserving buildings, it is about safeguarding the stories and memories intricately woven into these historical treasures.
