The Department of Architecture at Tishk International University – Sulaimani proudly hosted an intensive 4-day training workshop titled “Mastering Rhino 3D for Sustainable Developments,” held from April 19th to 22nd, 2025. This high-impact program was led by Ms. Soma Hadad, a British-Kurdish architect and academic well-known for her expertise in sustainable and digital design practices.
The workshop successfully brought together TIU students, faculty, and external participants for a hands-on experience in Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, advancing their skills in digital modelling and sustainability-focused design.
Key Objectives of the Training
The objective of the training was to equip both internal and external students and staff with specialized skills in digital and sustainable design. The key goals included:
- Introducing Rhino 3D as a powerful tool for architectural modelling.
- Building participants’ capabilities in parametric and algorithmic design using Grasshopper.
- Demonstrating how to design architectural projects in compliance with international standards and regulations.
- Embedding sustainability principles into the design workflow.
- Promoting digital innovation for environmentally responsible architecture.
Comprehensive Workshop Schedule
Held over four days, each day included two engaging sessions that successfully blended theoretical concepts with hands-on practice, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for all attendees.
- Day 1 (April 19th):
- Introduction to Rhino 3D: Participants were introduced to the software’s interface and core tools.
- Basic 3D Modelling: The session focused on fundamental 3D modelling techniques essential for architectural design.
- Day 2 (April 20th):
- Parametric Design: Concepts of parametric and algorithmic design were explored using Grasshopper.
- Hands-On Practice: Students created parametric forms and practiced their new skills.
- Day 3 (April 21st):
- Sustainability Integration: This day was dedicated to integrating sustainability principles into the design process.
- Environmental Analysis: Participants used specialized plugins to perform environmental performance analysis on their designs.
- Day 4 (April 22nd):
- Final Project: The training culminated in a final project where students applied their skills to model a sustainable concept.
- Project Presentations: Participants presented their final projects, followed by a group critique session.
Participation and Recognition
The workshop successfully attracted a diverse audience. Participation was free of charge for TIU Faculty and Students, while external participants paid a $100 fee, which included training materials and licensed software access.
Upon completion, all participants were awarded a Certificate of Completion from TIU. Additionally, international certificates were provided by the trainer, Ms. Soma Hadad, on behalf of Rhino-certified training programs, for students who demonstrated exceptional progress and creativity throughout the workshop.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Soma Hadad for leading this highly successful training with immense dedication and expertise. Her mentorship inspired participants to explore innovative, sustainability-driven design approaches through digital tools. We also express our appreciation to the enthusiastic students, faculty members, and external participants whose active engagement and contributions made this event truly impactful.
Next Steps
Highlights from the workshop, including participant projects, photos, and feedback, will soon be available on our Media Gallery page.
