The Civil Engineering CSC Club at Tishk International University (TIU) successfully organized a seminar titled “Most Common Defects in Residential Building Structures” on March 4, 2025. The event was held in Hall 1-56 and was part of the club’s ongoing mission to enhance students’ practical understanding of civil engineering issues beyond the classroom.
Insights from an Experienced Professional
The seminar was delivered by Mr. Rafiq Mahmood, an experienced professional in the field of construction and structural engineering. His presentation focused on frequently observed issues in residential buildings, including foundation settlement, wall cracking, moisture intrusion, and structural deterioration due to poor construction practices or material selection.
Throughout the session, Mr. Rafiq provided real-world examples and photos from site inspections to illustrate how such defects originate, how they can be identified early, and effective methods for prevention and remediation. His practical insights were especially valuable for civil engineering students preparing for careers in construction, supervision, or structural design.
Bridging Academia and Industry
The event drew a large number of students and faculty members, all of whom engaged actively during the Q&A session. Their great interest in the topic demonstrated an appreciation for the relevance of the information provided.
This seminar is one of several initiatives by the CSC Club designed to bridge academic learning with industry challenges. The Department of Civil Engineering at TIU continues to support such student-led activities that contribute to professional development, critical thinking, and field-based learning.
