On Monday, May 12, 2025, the Civil Engineering Department and the CSC Club at Tishk International University – Sulaimani, in collaboration with Lyzan Company, successfully organized a technical workshop titled “Durability of Concrete Structures and the Mechanisms for Better Performance.” The event was held at the TIU-Sulaimani Conference Hall and brought together engineers, students, researchers, and industry professionals for a deep dive into the most critical challenges facing civil engineering today.
Workshop Focus and Structure
The workshop was meticulously designed to provide attendees with both foundational knowledge and practical solutions for improving the performance and service life of concrete structures. It addressed the particular challenges posed by the harsh environmental conditions in Iraq and similar regions. The session was divided into two key segments to provide a comprehensive learning experience. The first part, Foundations of Durability and Environmental Challenges, explored the scientific principles behind concrete deterioration, highlighting how local climate, moisture exposure, and chemical attacks contribute to structural degradation. The second part, Solutions and Innovations for Enhanced Performance, focused on practical, modern solutions. It introduced advanced materials and protective systems, specifically Penetron Admix, as a sustainable and effective tool for strengthening concrete durability and minimizing long-term maintenance needs.
Expert Speakers and Collaboration
The event was enriched by the expertise of two distinguished speakers. Mr. Hawraz Mohammed, Area Manager for Penetron North Africa and a specialist in concrete durability, delivered a comprehensive lecture on innovative waterproofing and admixture technologies. He provided a global perspective on best practices in concrete engineering. In addition, Engineer Sherwan Khairullah, the Owner and General Manager of Lyzan Company, shared valuable practical insights from local projects and industry experience. His presentation emphasized the importance of adopting modern standards in construction practices within the region. This successful collaboration between TIU and Lyzan Company exemplifies the university’s commitment to bridging academic research with industry needs.
Outcomes and Recognition
The workshop attracted a wide and engaged audience from both academic and industrial backgrounds, fostering productive discussion and knowledge exchange. All registered participants received a digital Certificate of Participation, recognizing their valuable involvement and interest in advancing civil engineering practices. The initiative successfully empowered students and professionals to stay updated on cutting-edge technologies in structural engineering, reinforcing the university’s role in shaping the next generation of civil engineering leaders.
