On 19 February 2026, the Department of English Language Teaching at Tishk International University organized a national workshop on the occasion of International Mother Language Day entitled “The Power of the Kurdish Language in Literature and Its Impact on Preserving National Identity.” The event brought together academics and students to reflect on the Kurdish language as a central pillar of cultural heritage and collective identity. Professor Dr. Khidir Masum Hawrami, president of Tishk International University-Sulaimani, was present on the panel.

The workshop was moderated by Dr. Akam Rashid Mohammed, Head of the ELT Department. Professor Dr. Sabah Barzanji delivered a presentation analyzing how classical Kurdish poets contributed to strengthening and internationalizing the Kurdish language, focusing particularly on Mawlawi as a significant example of literary influence and cultural depth.

Professor Dr. Mohammed Amin Abdullah then addressed the role of the Kurdish language in safeguarding national identity, explaining how language functions as a vehicle for preserving heritage, shaping national awareness, and ensuring intellectual continuity across generations.

Following the presentations, the audience actively engaged in a question-and-answer session, raising thoughtful inquiries and contributing to a productive academic dialogue. The workshop concluded with the university president presenting letters of appreciation to the speakers in recognition of their valuable contributions, formally closing the event.
