About English Language Teaching Department

The Department of English Language Teaching offers a B.A. program in English Language. The primary aim of this department is to train students to be English Language Teachers for all levels of education system. The basic components of the undergraduate program consist of professional courses including methodological and pedagogical approaches to foreign language teaching as well as raising students’ awareness of the English language system. The Department of English Language Teaching provides courses related to second language acquisition and second language teaching methodology and organizes practice teaching in selected schools. Through elective courses, students are provided with opportunities to pursue individual interests in various subjects. Graduates of this department may work in state schools, state offices, private schools and private companies in various positions such as teacher of English Language, translator and civil servants.[/su_note]

The Mission of the English Language Teaching B.A. degree program is to prepare students to become qualified English language teachers for primary, secondary, and high schools by training them in the fundamental concepts, knowledge, techniques, and essential skills of English language teaching and learning to contribute to education and today’s society.

Objectives

  • Graduates will be competent in the basic terms and principles of language teaching for application.
  • Graduates will be able to teach using modern methods and approaches of teaching foreign language.
  • Graduates will be skillful in critical thinking, creativity, problem solving skills and translation skills.
  • Graduates will be able to list methods of assessment and evaluation as well as determine suitable teaching strategies for a particular group of students.
  • Graduates will have the ability to plan the educating process and using the required approaches by considering the individual needs and difference of the students as well as the requirements of the teaching field.
  • Graduates will be prepared to conduct collaborative work using education as a medium to connect with society.

  5. Plan the educating process and using required approaches by considering the individual needs and difference of the students as well as the requirements of the teaching field.

As an ELT  major, your career goals may include  making researches, education, language professions,  or business.  Students who are interested in ELT search for answers to current problems and ways to avoid future obstacles. Specialized fields of ELT, such as methods of teaching, curriculum development and assessment have made key contributions.

By the end of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Define the basic terms and principles of language teaching.
  2. Communicate ideas in English language effectively and appropriately in written and oral forms both in academic and non-academic contexts
  3. Apply the appropriate methods of assessment and evaluation in the education process to obtain accurate feedback on learners’ progress.
  4. Teach the language skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading effectively
  5. Apply the basic terms and principles of language teaching in the teaching process.
  6. Apply modern methods and approaches of teaching foreign language.
  7. Differentiate between material adoption, adaptation, and development methods.
  8. Translate from and into English and their mother tongues.
  9. Use appropriate methods and techniques to improve students’ critical thinking, creative thinking and problem solving skills.
  10. Plan teaching and learning processes by considering individual needs, differences of students, and needs of the teaching field.
  11. Use required methods and techniques for student-centered teaching by considering individual and cultural differences.
  12. Provide guidance and counselling to students and their parents to boost the quality of learning of each individual student.
